Wreck to Ride: Delica 4X4 Adventure Van

Wreck to Ride: Delica 4X4 Adventure Van

In the world of adventure vans, where 4x4 camper vans are commanding high prices, one man, Sam Gosling, embarked on a quest for the perfect off-road campervan companion. What started as a search for a capable 4x4 van turned into a project that blended nostalgia, functionality, and a touch of the '90s futurism.

Discovering the Delica Delight: A Pajero Alternative

Sam was on the lookout for a 4x4, particularly a long-wheelbase Pajero, but fate had a different plan. The Delica, a hidden gem, shared many characteristics with the sought-after Pajero. Recognising its potential, Sam realised that not only could it serve as his adventure rig, but also double as a work van. The allure of the Delica's MK3 model, with its distinct '90s aesthetics, captured Sam's imagination.

A Van with Character: Quirks of the MK3 Delica

The MK3 Delica, with its crystal-lite roof panels featuring electric blinds, stood out with a unique charm. Under its front seats rested the standard 2.5TD engine, complemented by a 2H, 4H, 4L gearbox, and locking front hubs.

First Drive Adventures: The Unexpected Twist

Sam found his dream Delica on Facebook Marketplace, but the joy of the discovery was soon met with a challenging twist. On his first drive, the brakes failed, leading to a crash into a ditch and a tree. Despite being sold with an MOT and new brakes, the mishap set back Sam's plans. Sam's van had been converted to a manual by a previous owner, enhancing its off-road capabilities. Despite the unconventional setup, and undeterred with the problems, Sam saw this as an opportunity for a complete overhaul.

From Wrecks to Rides: Building the Micro Machine

Undeterred by the crash, Sam embarked on a mission to build his ideal adventure van. The focus was on a new suspension and wheel setup, with a particular fascination for the 33x12.5-inch tires. The van's interior underwent customisation, with a few unique pieces for the cab and an upgrade to exceed trim level front seats. The result was a minimal yet efficient day van/camper setup that could be easily removed for work purposes.

Toy Car Aesthetics: Shaved Bull Bars, JDM Roof Racks, + More

The project evolved beyond functionality; it became an expression of Sam's personality. The exterior received a facelift with a shaved bull bar, a '90s JDM roof rack, a snorkel, and Hellas to complete the rugged look. The finishing touch was a silly exhaust, adding a touch of the toy car aesthetic that made Sam's Delica truly one-of-a-kind.

Sam's Delica Adventure Unleashed

Sam Gosling's journey with the Delica is a testament to the resilience of adventure enthusiasts. From unexpected crashes to creative overhauls, his story is a rollercoaster of determination and passion. As the pictures showcase the transformation, Sam's Delica stands as a unique blend of nostalgia, functionality, and a touch of the '90s. It's more than a van; it's a reflection of the adventurous spirit that defines the van life community.
